Jesus clears the temple; John 2:12-25
It is Passover. People were buying sacrifices at the temple.
It became a business. This angered Jesus for He made a whip and caused quite a
stir. This zeal prompted the Jews to demand a sign to prove His authority to
proceed as He did. He told them about His upcoming resurrection which they
misunderstood. His disciples believed after He was resurrected. Others believed
in Jesus after witnessing His miracles. But He … would not … trust anyone.
There is this beautiful person who loves unconditionally;
who is the epitome of love; who is the embodiment of perfection; who is full of
grace and mercy; no one has more compassion than Him. Yet, we see a side of Him
that may be contrary to His nature. Or is it? Is God zealous? Does God get
angry? Can God mistrust? YES! Please see Ezekiel 40:25, Psalm 95:10, and above reference
for support. What can we learn here? God is telling us it is acceptable to have
zeal, anger, and distrust. It is superbly all right to have zeal provided it is
for a good purpose and not just ignorant zeal; Galatians 4:18. It is acceptable
to be angry as long as we do not sin; Psalm 4:4. It is okay to not trust
everyone. There are instances where we understand issues backwards. Trust should
not be freely given; it is earned. Yet after earning your trust, some will
still prove themselves untrustworthy for people are fickle. There is One who
deserves your trust and He never changes. He is eternal. He is the same
yesterday, today, and forever; Hebrews 13:8. But He will not demand your trust
and will usually remind you how trustworthy He really is.
Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you be destroyed in your
way, for His wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in
Him. Psalm 2:12
